Green County Stomp
(Big Bob Young)
INSPIRATION; the events depicted in this song are all true. My good friend who was also in the same band I was set up a gig for us all in his home town. The VFW hall in Leakesville Mississippi is where we played and "Old Joe" was Hal's dad. He sat quietly listening to the show until we played a medley of bluegrass tunes that included "Wildwood Flower". Then Joe jumped up and started doing a free style jig that I called the "Greene County Stomp".
LYRICS:
GREEN COUNTY STOMP
Way down south in Mississippi,
oh some where near the swamp
There’s a little town called Leakesville,
and the people there love to stomp
CH Oh and you can play for hours pickin’ the wildwood flower
The people hollerin’ please don’t stop,
‘cause the party’s just begun and boys we’re havin’ fun
doin’ the green county stomp
Hey now there’s old Joe he’s a merry old soul,
and he sure likes to rock and romp
he gets feelin’ mighty fine on that dandelion wine,
starts doin the green county stomp
CH
Lead:
It ain’t no waltz, it ain’t the tango,
but a polka works all right
Just follow me ya’ll down to the VFW hall
and we’ll stomp til’ the mornin light
CH
They call it cloggin’ in Carolina;
it’s a buck dance in Tennessee
But it’s called stompin’ here in Green County,
and it’s a sight too see
Lead:
CH
Doin’ the Green county stomp, doin’ the green county stomp
